
Mass building of adits which have reached up to now, has begun in Monastery in a XVIII-th century. During a fire of 1718 all wooden constructions of Kievo-Pecherskaya Lavra have been destroyed. Then monks have made decision to construct underground constructions as it was necessary to store supplies somewhere. It is supposed that underground constructions could be used also for shelter from new fires and attacks of enemies. So in the Church there were tens every possible cellars, glaciers, secret subways. And after the monastery has entered into a citadel Kievo-Pecherskaya Lavra, in the middle of a XVIII-th century began to do "poterny" underground corridors on which the besieged could leave secretly a fortress) and so-called "hearings" (objects for revealing of enemy underminings).
In quantity and uniqueness of underground constructions of Laurels surpasses all Ukrainian monasteries. Today on its territories of an order of 20 underground objects, but a part from them it is filled up, as experts were afraid of possible collapses. But recently some of underground constructions have cleared away again and now are going to drive there tourists.
«These underground rooms and tunnels lie almost under all territory of the Top Monastery and are unique, as created them within nine centuries, since XI century», — has told to us research assistant Kievo-Pechersky of reserve of Evgenie Cherednichenko. At present research assistants investigated about 1 thousand in sq. m of vaults, among which the narrow corridors conducting to different corners of reserve, and huge adits.
